Backup & restore
Create encrypted local backups of your book, restore them on the same or a new machine, and build a backup habit that protects your data.
Your books live on your computer, so backups are how you protect against a failed disk, a lost laptop or a mistaken bulk change. Acronix Books makes encrypted backups quick and safe.
How backups work
Acronix Books writes a clean, compact snapshot of your database rather than copying the live file, so a backup is never taken mid-write. The backup file is encrypted just like your live book — it carries no readable data, so it's safe to store on an external drive or the cloud.
Create a backup
- Open Settings → Backup.
- Choose Create backup and pick a destination folder.
- Acronix Books writes a timestamped, encrypted backup file.
A simple, reliable rhythm
Back up after every GST filing, at each month-end, and before any large import or bulk edit. Keep at least one copy on a separate device or drive — a backup that sits only on the same disk as the original doesn't protect you from disk failure.
Restore a backup
- Open Settings → Backup → Restore (or choose restore during onboarding on a fresh install).
- Select the backup file.
- Provide the credentials that protect it. Because the backup is encrypted, restoring requires the password / recovery code tied to that book.
- Acronix Books verifies and opens the restored book.
Restoring replaces the current book
A restore brings back the state captured in the backup file. Any entries made after that backup are not in it. Take a fresh backup of the current book before restoring an older one if you might need the recent data.
Backups vs cloud sync
Local backups and cloud sync complement each other:
- Local backup — a point-in-time snapshot you control, ideal for archives and off-site copies.
- Cloud sync — continuous, isolated, encrypted backup of your whole book that also enables fresh-device restore.
For most businesses, using both is the safest setup.
